NASA Discover New Earth Like Planet - Kepler-22b

It may have a radius about 2.4 times that of our home planet, but NASA scientists have confirmed that Kepler-22b — depicted in the artist's conception up top — is the first planet we've ever confirmed orbits within the so-called "habitable zone" of a Sun-like star, making it the most Earth-like planet we've yet discovered.

In astronomy, the habitable zone (also known as the Goldilocks zone") is the region surrounding a star in which an orbiting planet could maintain liquid water (and, by extension, life) on its surface. And as the "Goldilocks" moniker implies, whether or not a planet resides inside a habitable zone has everything to do with whether the planet is a little too cold, a little too hot, or just right, temperature-wise.

Take Kepler-21b, for example, whose discovery was announced last week by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory. Kepler-21b is even closer to the size of Earth than Kepler-22b, but it orbits far too close to its sun to sustain any form of life we're familiar with; as this conception of K-21b by artist Ron Miller clearly illustrates, surface temperatures on the planet are estimated to reach as much as 3000-degrees Fahrenheit — that's hot enough to melt iron, not to mention any hope of us ever calling K-21b "Earth 2.0."


But Kepler-22b is a different story. Sure, the planet orbits about 15% closer to its star than Earth does to the Sun, but its star is also significantly cooler, dimmer, and smaller than ours. And while scientists have yet to determine K-22b's composition — be it rocky, gaseous or liquid — they estimate that surface temperatures on K-22b average a very Earth-like 72-degrees Fahrenheit.

"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."

"Mysterious Light Was a Meteor" says U of A Astronomer - KVOA Tucson - September 15, 2011

This is a news piece from my local news station here in Tucson, AZ on the mysterious object (although I think there was more than one incident that night) that was seen across the southwest (i missed it !?!?!) on Sep. 14, 2011. KVOA = same news channel that interviewed me about UFOs

"TUCSON - What was it that streaked across the sky Wednesday night? People in Arizona, California and Nevada saw it.

Tucsonan Devin Schrader says, "We both saw a bright flash and then we were able to look up and it flashed again. And then it dimmed down and flashed a third time."

Schrader and his wife were in their car. He says, "Even with street lights and other cars coming toward us, it was bright enough to catch our attention. So I imagine it was a big object."

Schrader is a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and an expert in meteorites. And he says that's what the light was.

He estimates the fireball was "the size of a basketball, probably more." He says, "Most meteors that people see, considered shooting stars, are only about the size of a grain of sand."

Schrader thinks the fireball was better than an extra terrestrial. He laughs, "An ET would be fantastic. But it's kind of is an extra terrestrial. It's not from the earth. It tells us about where we came from, how our solar system formed."

Astronomer Tod Lauer works at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson. He says the meteor is "a reminder that there's a solar system out there that occasionally decides to touch the earth by throwing a rock at us or something like that."

Tucsonan Michael Farmer hunts meteorites, the rocks that fall from meteors. He's in Denver attending a gem and mineral show. And he says everyone is talking about the bright light.

Farmer says he's ready to rush home to look for pieces of it.

Farmer says, "I have people working for me that are trying to analyze some of the video tapes and eyewitness reports to narrow down a possible fall location."

Farmer believes the meteor might have fallen in Southern Arizona.

He says, "I'm obsessed. There's nothing like holding something from outer space. This thing four days ago would have been on the other side of the moon."

Schrader estimates the meteor was 4.5 billion years old.."

I dont know what to think about what was seen that night, seems there was more than one incident that took place... definitely some UFO footage showed up as seen in my previous news posts about the incident... and other footage that looked completely different, resembling a meteorite burning up. so meow?
