To celebrate National Train Day, i headed to norfolk southern's reading line at blandon, pa for some heavy hill-climbing freight action. Located near the top of the grade out of Reading, i am at the Guldin Rd. crossing which sports a safetran hybrid bell. 5 trains pass on this windy afternoon which had gusts of 60-65 mph.
First up is hot intermodal train 213, passing seconds after i arrive with two dash 9s bracketing an SD70M-2.
Next is train 38G with an SD70M-2 leading this time. Check out how much lower the tracks are down the line as the last cars round the bend.
Next we see and hear the safetran bell in action as train 18N approaches.
18N then passes with an SD70M-2 and a dash 8 muscling a train of loaded auto racks up the grade. Nice combination of wailing EMD and roaring GE power keeping the racks at track speed.
Fourth is train 33A, heading up the grade behind a pair of struggling catfish.
Finally, the catch of the day, train 19G heads down the roller-coaster terrain towards Reading. The train is headed by two SD40-2 engines (the leader with a loud RS3L), a dash 8, and ex-conrail SD50 #5420. Quite an impressive lash-up with over 100 cars of freight!
