Reagan Listens to Herself, Reagan's Cochlear Implant Activation

The first activation of a cochlear implant for an 8 year old Deaf girl.

Reagan's hearing loss was diagnosed at 15 months of age. Sign language was her first langage. She has worn bilateral hearing aids her whole life and recieved speech therapy and auditory training most of her life too. At the beginning of 2009 she came to us saying that she thought she might want a cochlear implant. As a family, we discussed a CI, the pro's, the con's, the reasons why she wanted one, the goals, the expectations, we went through the process, helped her to see the ENT, audiologist and meet other implant users. When she made the decision, with our support, to get an implant she was "100% sure" that she wanted it. We always said we wanted her involved in the decision making process, we just never expected it to happen when she was 8 years old.
